Once upon a time I downloaded a Google organic search report from Google Analytics for another manager and there it was starring right back at me, the dreaded “not provided” row in a keyword report. I laughed, I cried, I scratched my head, I did some research, Ryan DeShazer even temporarily lost his mind – but what I didn’t do is make a general proclamation that “SEO is dead”. Google decided in 2011 that they would not report keyword level queries for users who were signed-in. Optify did a study that showed up to 39% of organic visits could be reported as “not provided”. While not providing all keyword queries may cause some SEO professionals to lose sleeps, it could be worse – think if a dating profile didn’t provide 39% of their information!
